Dr. Fayaz is an Assistant Professor (Lecturer) in Computer Science (Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) at the University of Exeter, UK, and an Honorary Lecturer at University College London (UCL), UK.
Dr. Fayaz’s research focuses on machine learning for risk mitigation, with the aim of strengthening community resilience and sustainability. His work centres on machine learning and statistical modelling for spatiotemporal data to support risk-based decision-making in complex systems associated with the natural environment, natural hazards, and critical infrastructure. His research spans predictive modelling, interpretable and physics-informed artificial intelligence, decision-support systems, probabilistic hazard analysis, early warning systems, and surrogate modelling. His technical expertise includes artificial neural networks, time-series modelling, reinforcement learning, feature engineering, graph-based learning, Bayesian inference, reliability analysis, and explainable artificial intelligence.
Currently, Dr. Fayaz is an Academic Lead for the Center of Environmental Intelligence at the University of Exeter, UK. He is also on the editorial boards of three journals: i) International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction (IJDRR), ii) Frontiers in Earth Science, and iii) Smart and Sustainable Built Environment
Outside of his academic pursuits, Dr. Fayaz actively practices martial arts, including Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai, and incorporates weight training and long-distance running into his fitness routine. He further enjoys hiking and traveling to explore new landscapes. Dr. Fayaz is also an avid listener of informative podcasts, such as The Peter Attia Drive and Huberman Lab, and finds inspiration in reading thought-provoking books like Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl and Beyond Good and Evil by Friedrich Nietzsche.
